Here's what you need to know: The DDJ-1000 has a ton of features that DJ's have been asking for in a controller for a long, long time! It's a four-channel mixer layout made to mimic it's industry standard club setup with- *DRUM ROLL* full-sized jog wheels! This is one of the biggest features DJ's have wanted in a controller since their introduction to the pro market. It even has a jog adjust so you can change the tension on job wheel.

    Next important new feature is the on screen display built into the jog wheels. This cool and super useful feature provides valuable information such as, track waveform, time cue point locations and even a rotation marker. 

    Also important to note- This controller can operate standalone. So what does that mean? This means that you don't need to have the controller connected to a laptop to operate it. The mixer works standalone with for inputs and a booth, 2 master outputs and 2 mic inputs. This is super handy if you want to switch it up and add gear to your setup such as turntables, or just don't want rely entirely on the controller.

    The DDJ-1000 has two USB ports, which allows you to switch between DJ's seamlessly. That might not seem like a big deal until you try to handoff with a controller that only has one USB and find that you have to totally stop the music to achieve the same goal.

    Pioneer has even included something for the scratch dj's! The DDJ-1000 is equipped with the  Magvel fader, the same fader you'll find in their top of the line club mixers (minus the S9, which ships with the Magvel Pro.) A couple of other notable additions are the same onboard hardware fx that you'll find on the industry standard DJM-900NXS mixer and improved performance pads. The new pads feature new ways to implement hot cues, pad fx, beat jump, their onboard sampler, keyboard mode, beatloop and more!

    DJ Kue has been using the demo unit we sent him for radio mixes and a few mobile gigs and he's reported that it's held up really well. At home he rocks on the club standard CDJ/DJM setup and he feels like it mimics that setup remarkably well. 

   This controller has been designed SPECIFICALLY for Rekordbox, meaning there is no Serato support for it at this time. If you're having hesitations about whether you want to switch over to Rekordbox or not, make sure you watch the full video to here Kue's opinion on the matter.

Scratching is part of the foundation of DJ culture and we at World of Stereo feel that supporting an open atmosphere of creativity where DJ's, producers and musicians can perform without the politics of the club/entertainment industry looming over them is vital for the survival of the art form. For each season we provide a full JBL PRX sound system with SRX subwoofer for a little extra kick, two full DJ setups, consisting of a Rane Sixty-Two pro mixer, Technics 1200 M3D's and a complete Pioneer CDJ-2000 setup, along with DJM-750mk2 mixer.      Ableton engineers have focused on making their already efficient workflow even cleaner with their latest revision. To achieve this, they've implemented a few changes to their file browsing system, made it possible to control more than ever before directly from the Ableton Push and made some huge revisions to the functionality of clip and session views. 

     Ben takes us through a new feature in the browser called Collections. Collections are color coded categories that allow you to store literally anything within an Ableton session to it, which could be extremely helpful if you produce multiple genres of music or simply want to start cultivating material for a new project. They've made it extremely easy to assign VST's, FX, Instruments, Samples, etc to a collection by simply right clicking on it. 

     Another new exciting feature is what Ableton is calling Capture. Capture takes the old tale of "WHY WASN'T I RECORDING THAT?!" and turns it into- "NO BIGGIE!" If you're just jamming out on your Push or other midi controller and forgot to hit record, or just happened to unexpectedly bang something out that you really liked, you can now retain simply navigate to the Capture icon, click it and live will automatically capture that information into a new clip. Not only does is capture that information, but it will also detect the tempo, adjust the rest of the project to that temp, and analyze your playing to determine a start and stop time. No more counting down the metronome and hoping to nail a take under pressure!

     Speaking of the metronome, Ableton has added a bunch of new sound options for your click, but more importantly- in Ableton Live 10 you can choose new rhythmic subdivisions, which is extremely helpful in you're working in a slower tempo or maybe you would like the click to play in triplets to encourage you to play differently.

     Ableton has also introduced a new synthesizer in Live 10- Wavetable. As you would expect, Wavetable employs wavetable synthesis, which means that it essentially uses existing samples repeated in cycles or a "table" to generate tones. This type of synthesis is extremely versatile and Ableton has packaged it with a number of familiar subtractive and FM synthesis methods so that creating with Wavetable is an intuitive experience from the outset. Wavetable has also been designed to be accessible directly from Push and every single parameter can be edited from Push. You can even setup modulation matrix's and build patches from scratch, without ever touching your computer!

     While we're on the subject of Push, Ableton has made some huge improvements to Push's step sequencer. Designers have combined their famous notes mode, with their step sequencer- which converts the top half of Push's pads into "steps" of the sequence you're working on, while the bottom half is converted to a key bed, just like a keyboard controller, but with all of the notes of scale or key you're working in, including their chords function. This function will trigger a desired type of chord with Push's pads and they will play solely in your desired key, making creating as intuitive as ever. 

     Ableton has also improved several different views in Push's OLED screen, for example- you can now see and fully edit notes within your sequence directly from Push. You can add devices, and audio effects directly from the hardware and you have improved visualizations for EQ Eight, Compressors and more with a full spectrum readout, making it much easier to dial your sound in. 

     In Ableton Live 10 you'll also find a creative new audio effect- Echo. Ableton already has a number of delays designed in, but Echo has been created with a new goal in mind- to create a warm and vintage sounding delay to capture a sort of "greatest hits" of legendary hardware tones. To touch on a few of it's unique features, Echo has it's own input drive function to create unique saturation, reverb and visualization for delay time and feedback. In Echo's character tab you'll find a host of unique parameters that emulate hardware defects such as wobble, noise and morph effects, to really get creative.

     Probably one of my favorite new Live 10 features is multi-clip midi editing. You can now select several clips and see and edit all of their midi notes in one clip at one time. If you're reading this far, I'm assuming that you've produced a track from start to finish in Ableton and I don't need to tell you how huge this is. You're going to save an enormous amounts of time that would be spent clicking in and out of clips by just selecting them all at once to make sure your drums are in time with your bass, snares are in tune, etc etc. Another nice addition to Live's editing abilities is a new automation shortcut- simply hit "A" and automation lanes will appear/disappear within your session. Automation can also now snap to your beat grid to make editing automation a bit faster an cleaner. 

     Overall we're extremely impressed with Ableton Live 10 and we definitely suggest you grab a copy or an upgrade!

Arturia is known for the stellar, high quality construction of their synthesizers and the Minibrute2 and 2S are no exception! The feel of the keys and knobs are top notch and the wood paneling gives it a boutique finish that will look great in any setup. 

The Minibrute2 is a two oscillator analog synth with two LFO's and an improved semi-modular patch bay that makes sound creation possibilities infinite. MiniBrute's first VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) has six switchable waveforms: Saw + UltraSaw, Square +Pulse width, Triangle + Metalizer and it's second: Sine, Saw and Square. What this means is that you have a large number of mixing possibilities and thus the ability to create some really unique tones before even taking into consideration the LFO's, envelope and other modulation factors. You'll also find a white noise generator to create a lot of the popular modern electronic music patches you hear on chart busting recordings. 

As with the original Minibrute's Arturia has brought back some of their most popular features, such as the Steiner Parker filters (Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass, Notch modes) and the Brute Factor distortion for heavy, mangled soundscapes. The MiniBrute 2 also includes an arpeggiator, as with the original, though they've added a couple of more modes and a host of modulation options, via the patch bay.

MiniBrute 2's patch bay is sure to be a hit with modular enthusiasts and pairs swimmingly with their newly announced RackBrute modular cases. The RackBrute comes in 3U and 6U models and makes mounting and powering Eurorack modules a breeze, something that for years has been relegated to boutique crafters and not always suited for use in the US market. They've solved this issue in a beautifully crafted case that mounts easily to the Minibrute 2 or 2S and will be available in the US around late February, as with the Minibrute2. 

To round out the Minibrute2 Arturia has included it's smooth action keyboard from their flagship synth, the MatrixBrute, so you can expect many many hours of playful programming and an endless way's to create!

The Rundown-

The Digitone is an 8-Voice frequency modulated (FM) desktop synthesizer with four available tracks for sequencing it's synth engines and four available midi tracks (for sequencing other external hardware with the Digitone as the masterclock.) Elektron's goal was to create a modern and easy to use synthesizer and to do so, they've simplified the FM workflow and condensed the parameters of the FM synthesis engines of the past and fused them with a familiar subtractive synthesis signal flow. 

Elektron is known for their intuitive sequencers and the Digitone comes equipped with a 16-step sequencer, with micro timing capabilities for programming a variety of styles for different genres, such a loose hip-hop drum sequences. Each track also comes equipped with it's own arpeggiator, which can also be programmed to play their own sequence as well. 

The Digitone comes equipped with nearly 500 presets, which is in line with Elektron's vision of making it easy to fire up and get right to work. The ambient pads are glassy and delicate, while still being rich enough to sit nicely in the mix, straight out of the box with no extra processing. While Jake was jamming, one of the first things I noticed was the ease of editing important parameters to promote a really fun workflow, such as the envelope, filters, pitch, feedback, etc to effect the sound dramatically and immediately. Their on board distortion is heavy and dirty and everything you want distortion to be and even with all of the background noise at NAMM it cut through in all the right ways. 

Elektron firmly believes that the synth engine in all of their instruments should interact smoothly and intuitively with the sequencer and judging by the speed by which I've seen Jake produce results, I'd say they achieved just that. You can add any sound per step, per synth track, which results in an extremely powerful sonic tool. Each step can be assigned your chosen number of voices and all parameters of those voices can be altered per step as well. Want to use the Digitone as a drum machine? No problem, simply store your chosen samples and save them to your chosen sequencer step. Instant synth, drum machine combo.

Freedom Flex H4 IP-

First we took a look at Chauvet's newest pro uplight, the Freedom Flex H4 IP system. The "IP" stands for Ingress Protection, which is an international standard marking for products designed to protect against dust, water and the elements to make it the perfect pro solution for indoor AND outdoor lighting needs. It contains four 10 watt pro grade LED's with their patented hex chip technology, which gives you SIX color mixing options: red, green, blue, amber white and uv. The extremely robust design also features a huge improvement over their other rechargeable uplights- a removable, replaceable battery. The battery will give you 20 hours on a single color, 8 hours of color mixing and it can be replaced on the fly with seconds of downtime!

Cumulus Low Lying Fog Machine-

The new Cumulus might have been one of my favorite new products from Chauvet DJ, if not only for it's simplicity. It requires NO dry ice, unlike all of the other professional grade low lying fog machines. It only needs a little fog juice and distilled water and comes equipped with a variable speed, DMX controllable fan to give you the same fast fog cloud effect for a "dancing on the clouds" look or you can slow it down for the "creepy crawly" slow moving thick fog, perfect for haunted houses. Pioneer has taken a lot of the ideas from their flagship 2-channel mixer- the S9, and incorporated them into the DDJ-1000 pad functionality and effects and with the new "keyboard" feature you can experiment with a lot of tone play like you see at many of the Red Bull Thr33style battles and across new school turntablist routines. Hit the "sampler" button and the pads will control Rekordbox's internal software sampler so you can drop one shots or loops and get really creative on the fly.

The layout of the player section really takes it's cues from the NXS2 line of CDJ's, which will make a lot of people who are familiar with their units from the club feel immediately comfortable on the DDJ-1000. Likewise, the mixer portion is also laid out just like the industry standard DJM-900NXS2, with 2 mic inputs (1x XLR in and 1x1/4" in), 4 channels to simultaneously control 4 Rekordbox decks at once and their highly acclaimed Magvel fader, so you can get some serious technical cuts in! Pioneer also added some new effects and the controls themselves have the same high quality build and placement as their high end DJ mixers. 

The DDJ-1000 controller is built to specifically for Rekordbox DJ, which now supports video and it ships with an authorization for the full version of the software. Combined this with their brand new lighting controller- the RB-DMX1 and you can create a world-class nightclub experience anywhere you go!

So here's the scoop: 

The Phase is part controller, part needle, part magical wireless DVS control vinyl. Comprised of two small transmitters and a docking station/receiver, the Phase operates on top of any record (or surface for that matter) and sends rotational data to your DVS interface/mixer just like a cartridge would through a headshell, down the tonearm, out the phono pre to your interface to achieve the goal of controlling your DJ software like a regular record. Here's the kicker: since Phase operates over their own specially developed wireless protocol, it's not tethered to a turntable like your control vinyl would be. One of the most convincing parts of their NAMM demo was, indeed, when the demonstrator grabbed the record off of the turntable and passed it out to someone in the audience and asked them to "air scratch" the record, or basically hold it in the air and rotate it as if they were scratching. The results were impressive. 

Phase will ship with two transmitters and the charging dock and can hold an estimated 10 hours of battery life and wireless DJ fun. No need to plug your turntable into your DVS interface any longer- Just plug the Phase dock straight into where you would have previously plugged in your decks and it will emulate the time code for Serato, Traktor and Rekordbox DJ eliminating the need for cartridges and headshells altogether. 

Though Phase doesn't have an official ship date yet, our sources have estimated we should see them arriving in our stores and available online around late Spring or early Summer with a projected price point of between $200-$300. Considering how much most of us DJ's spend on stylus a year alone, it's worth it's weight in gold!
