The Roland SPD-SX Special Edition is a professional sampling pad designed for drummers, percussionists, producers, and live performers who need instant access to custom samples, loops, phrases, and complete backing tracks. Built on the proven SPD-SX platform, it combines responsive triggering, real-time sampling, expanded internal storage, flexible audio routing, and powerful performance features in a distinctive Sparkling Red finish.

The SPD-SX Special Edition features nine velocity-sensitive rubber pads with LED illumination, providing expressive playing and clear visibility during performances in dark environments. Each pad can be assigned to different sounds, allowing performers to trigger everything from one-shot samples and percussion sounds to loops, phrases, and backing tracks with precise control.

With 16GB of internal memory, the SPD-SX Special Edition can store up to 50 hours of 16-bit/44.1kHz mono audio and up to 10,000 files. This provides enough capacity to carry an extensive sample library without relying on additional external storage. Samples can be imported through USB or a USB flash drive and organized using the included SPD-SX Wave Manager software.

The SPD-SX Special Edition provides advanced Multi-Pad Sampling, allowing audio from an external player, computer, or other source to be captured directly into the unit. By striking individual pads at the desired start and end points, samples can be automatically truncated and assigned to different pads, making it easy to create multi-sampled phrases and custom pad layouts.

For live sound shaping, the SPD-SX Special Edition includes three onboard multi-effects processors consisting of one master effect and two kit effects. The master effects provide real-time control over processing such as filters, delays, short looping effects, and other assignable effects, while the kit effects can be assigned to individual performance setups.

The SPD-SX Special Edition also provides flexible connectivity for professional stage and studio applications. Master and sub outputs allow sounds to be routed to a mixing console, monitoring system, or separate channels, while the headphone output can be used for monitoring the internal click or individual pad sounds. Up to four additional external pads can also be connected using the two stereo external trigger inputs with appropriate splitter cables.

Computer integration is made easy through USB connectivity, allowing the SPD-SX Special Edition to work with a computer for sample management, recording, and music production. The included Ableton Live Lite license provides tools for creating original samples and using the SPD-SX as a pad controller, while audio from Ableton Live Lite and other computer applications can be captured directly into the sampling pad.
